FAQ

How frequently are therapy sessions scheduled? Generally, sessions are on a weekly basis. However, some clients benefit from twice weekly or every other week sessions. On occasion, monthly or as needed sessions may be available.

How long is a therapy session? I provide a 50-minute therapy session. The first session may be scheduled for a 90-minute, if requested when the appointment is scheduled; otherwise it is a 50-minute session. Please see the Fees page for additional information.

How long might I be in therapy? The length of treatment is highly variable. Clients may be in therapy for a few sessions to a few years. Some of the variables may include: your therapy goals, how severe or long-standing your symptoms or issues for treatment are, and effort to engage in therapy, our therapeutic relationship and ability to work effectively together, etc. You may always discontinue therapy at any time. I do not currently work with court-ordered clients so none of my clients are in therapy involuntarily.

How do you work with clients? We will discuss your goals for therapy and I will describe the course of treatment that I can provide to best assist you in reaching your goals.

What are the differences between a counselor, therapist, psychologist and psychiatrist? A psychologist (Psy.D. or Ph.D.) has completed a doctoral program and additional postdoctoral training. Most have previously completed a master’s program prior to earning their doctorate. To be identified as a psychologist, the doctor must pass both a national and state licensing exam and receive their license number (example: PSY21758). A postdoctoral fellow or registered psychologist is not yet licensed and will have a PSB number (example PSB54321) and must be supervised by a psychologist or psychiatrist. Psychologists may conduct psychological testing that can be used to determine diagnoses, develop appropriate treatment goals and plans, and such.
A psychiatrist (MD) is a medical doctor and has completed medical school and has a medical degree. Psychiatrists provide medication and can work collaboratively with psychologists and masters’ level counselors. Psychiatrists refer to psychologists for psychological testing.
A counselor or therapist or psychotherapist (MFT or LMFT) has completed a masters’ degree. A social worker (MSW or LCSW) has completed a masters’ degree. They provide case management and some counseling services. Masters’ level counselors/therapists refer to psychologists for psychological testing.
